whistle for willie

so i know some bloggers do "outfit to room" posts,

(anne kills it over at the city sage)
or "art to outfit" posts,
(this one from jen at jenloveskev guest posting for lulu's)

design*sponge even does this incredibly cool "living in" thing...
i think they're super cool.

super cool, right?!

for the longest time i've had the idea of doing something similar, and i'm going to give it a shot.

hear me out.

after having children, i found myself straddling two worlds.
cribs and couture. diapers and diamonds. pacifiers and picasso.

you get the idea.

i'm interested and inspired by both, so naturally, this little project will include the same.

up first:

inspired by ezra jack keats'
whistle for willie

(if you don't have this book for your kids... go get it.
all of keats' books are gorgeously vivid, classic yet modern, sweet and simple without being boring, and suitable for the very young to older kids.

Anyway, here's what went exploding in my mind when i was reading it to birdie the other night...

keepin it RILL.

i was really torn about posting this because, well, this girl acts like a total moron, and i truly believe her existence alone takes the womens' movement back at least 100 years.
but then i remembered that i am an educator, and that it is my duty to show you this horror in the hopes that we can begin taking the necessary steps to eradicate this kind of behavior in our great nation's youth.
or, at the very least, help save just one girl considering her future as the next
courtney stoddenkardashianmontag.

there are almost no words. almost.
it actually breaks my heart as much as disgusts me.

anderson cooper says it better than i could,
and without vomiting in the process.
or laughing hysterically and throwing things at their faces.

wow. right?
scary as hell.
funny only if it weren't so...rill.
he nails it.

my mama sent me a really interesting article written by lisa bloom in regards to the very subject of the future of our girls, based on how we talk to them, and the culture we've created, obsessed with appearance and youth.
its a quick, to the point read, but well worth your time.
go here and check it out for yourself.

i'd love to hear some of your thoughts on all this...

coincidentally i find myself very much in need of some ultra tall uggs circa 2004, capezio dance wear,  a serious blowout, and a cockatoo.

(not or two, cockatoo. geez.)

reading:
women, food, and god:
an unexpected path to almost anything
by geneen roth

(via amazon)
yes, i realize how "archetypal female" this sounds.  no, i don't care.
my reading material of late seems to be more
of the scented, glossy variety than the hardback
with big words and no pictures kind.
time to step up my game.

watching:
the funniest series i've seen on youtube in a long while. i have honestly been laughing for an hour and just about peed my skirt over these.
brilliant f-i-v-e part series
(because after you watch the first one you're going to be begging for a second...and third...!)
of readings of scripts from the jersey shore done in the style of oscar wilde.
are you ready to howl? its comedic effing genius.

that should sufficiently get you through the week.
(now go watch parts 2, 3, 4, & 5!
so far 2 is my fave.)

thanks for reading, you guys. it means a lot to me!
ps. i really do love your comments/constructive criticism, so please feel free to say anything
(and i mean it) in the comments section.
this is a safe place. i have an open door policy.
it works if you work it.
now, tell me about your mother...

sojourner truth would be so proud....

so i came across this little nugget today

(via kelly oxford's brilliantly hilarious tumblr blog)
and was like

a ha!

(via mtv)

um, no.

more like

(via reuters)

aha!

yes.

just the kick in the taco i needed.

i often struggle with censoring myself, be it with my pirate mouth or awesomely crude sense of humor, because i find it challenging  think others find it challenging to laugh at my jokes, meanwhile finding me incredibly attractive (because, lets face it, that's what we all want, right?), taking me seriously
as an educated woman,
and above all,
believing i am an amazing mama.

can we have/be it all?
is it acceptable for me to tell a raunchy
joke in the midst of my otherwise
eloquent dinner conversation?
does my dry, often acerbic wit put me in a box, so to speak, out of which i cannot escape
to otherwise define myself?
do those people still find me just
as equally a., b., and c.?

well.

i sure hope so.

i am a total blam blam.

and i certainly don't plan on hiding parts of myself as i grow up--and i use that term loosely--because aren't we supposed to become more
ourselves as we grow?
we may be continually influenced by numerous avenues telling us to be this, or hide that, but hows about we not set the women's movement back any further and just... be?

i realize i'm hardly the first to pose these questions, but i'm super psyched i got to use some
big words today.

tomorrow i'm doing a d.i.y. so fantastic it will make you wanna m.o.
get your chapstick ready.
